Description

Robert Hooke was a major scientific figure of the 17th century. Born in 1635, Hooke studied at Oxford before moving to London in the early 1660s. He became curator to the Royal Society and Gresham Professor of Geometry, and was hired by the City of London as a surveyor and architect. Working with Christopher Wren after the Great Fire in 1666, he was closely involved in the design of many buildings, including the Monument and numerous City churches.

Robert Hooke’s major contribution to 17th century scientific research and London architecture is clearly revealed in his diary, 1672-1683. Kept as a memorandum book to remind him of the many places he had been and people he had met each day, along with his pithy thoughts and observations about scientific research and the world around him, the diary offers an unparalleled glimpse into the exciting and vibrant world of restoration scientific discovery and the rebuilding of London from the ashes of the Great Fire.

Hooke’s diary was purchased by the City in 1891 and is now held at London Metropolitan Archives.

The original is currently on display to the public for the first time in the Square Mile at the City of London's Heritage Gallery, alongside items connected to the Great Fire and the rebuilding of London to 12 January 2017.
